In the Copa del Rey final, Mallorca defeated Real Sociedad by penalty shootout

For the first time in twenty-one years, Mallorca advanced to the Copa del Rey final after winning a penalty shootout on the road against Real Sociedad. The winning goal came from goalkeeper Dominik Greif.

After 120 minutes finished in a 1-1 draw, Mikel Oyarzabal’s spot-kick was blocked by Greif, who had previously saved a spot-kick from Brais Mendez in regulation time.

The final is set for April 6 in Sevilla, home of Mallorca.

It was expected that this match would be competitive given that the two teams’ first leg finished in a 0-0 draw three weeks before and Real Sociedad won 2-1 thanks to a late goal in a league encounter.

Javier Aguirre, the coach of Mallorca, skillfully deployed his defense, leaving Real Sociedad’s attacker Andre Silva with little room to maneuver.

Arsen Zakharyan’s first attempt on goal for the home team didn’t come until the half hour mark, and it was aimed directly at Greif.

After Dani Rodriguez’s excellent effort, Abdon Prats went just wide for Mallorca, and then Mendez blew a great opportunity to put Real Sociedad ahead.

Although Greif easily stopped Mendez’s meek attempt with his foot, Antonio Raillo handled Martin Zubimendi’s pass into the area carelessly, leading to a penalty.

Five minutes into the second half, right defender Giovanni Gonzalez of Mallorca scored the game’s opening goal, beating Remiro with a powerful far-post header. Real Sociedad had substituted the unproductive Silva with new acquisition Sheraldo Becker before halftime.

After two weeks without playing due to a thigh injury, Mikel Oyarzabal returned for Real Sociedad, who responded brilliantly with Takefusa Kubo active on the right.

After only eight minutes on the field, the captain of the home team raced onto Mendez’s ball and beat Greif with a diagonal right-footed shot in the 71st minute.

Greif’s angled shot from Becker went wide, putting Real Sociedad up 1-0 as Mallorca was unable to control the ball or get out of their half.

After a bustle in the first five minutes of extra time, Kieran Tierney came dangerously close to scoring, but Samu Costa stopped his shot before it could cross the line, according to a VAR review.

Remiro diverted a Sergi Darder free kick for a corner at the opposite end.

Two worn-out teams committed a lot of bothersome fouls in the second half of extra time, but they were unable to generate any opportunities, and the match proceeded to a decisive shootout.
