Will Shane Watson take over as head coach of Pakistan? What we know is as follows

Since the ODI World Cup last year, Pakistan cricket has been in the headlines due to the lack of a permanent head coach for the national side. Although Mohammad Hafeez performed a stand-in role during the tours of Australia and New Zealand, he is no longer associated with the PCB after Mohsin Naqvi’s appointment as board chairman. The choice to choose former Australian cricketer Shane Watson as head coach now rests with the PCB, who seems eager to do so.

The PCB sources claim that Watson had wanted a whopping $2 million in compensation each year, and the board had even agreed to pay him that amount. It will be the most sum of money ever paid to a foreign coach in Pakistan cricket history if he takes the position and leads the team. Watson’s decision is yet unknown, however, since it is expected that he would have to spend the most of his time in Pakistan due to his many responsibilities as a coach and pundit in other competitions.

“In addition to his Major League Baseball obligations in the USA, he has a young family in Australia. He is thus considering his options since the board wants him to spend as much time as possible in Pakistan assisting them in identifying and developing local potential,” the source said. Although Shane Watson has never coached the national team, he has made an impression on many by leading the Quetta Gladiators to their first playoff appearance in five years.

In the meantime, Darren Sammy is an additional contender whom the PCB may consider contacting in the event that Watson declines the invitation. While he was heading the Peshawar Zalmi, Sammy often made positive remarks about Pakistan. He is now the head coach of the West Indies limited-overs teams and also serves in the same capacity for Peshawar Zalmi, who finished second in the PSL 2024 league stage.
