Dutee Chand is living and training in fear after suffering a level 1 cancer attack

Dutee Chand, the fastest female runner in India, had the shock of her life when a doctor informed her in November 2021 that she had been diagnosed with level 1 cancer and had to give up running.

She had previously failed to go beyond the preliminary round in the women’s 100- and 200-meter events at the Tokyo Olympics.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-140479″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-man-sentenced-to-12-years-in-prison-in-rape-case-by-up-court-more-on-sports-rattled-by-level-1-cancer-dutee-living-and-in-fear-1692370820-750×357.jpg” alt=”theindiaprint.com man sentenced to 12 years in prison in rape case by up court more on sports rattled by level 1 cancer dutee living and in fear 1692370820″ width=”1481″ height=”705″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-man-sentenced-to-12-years-in-prison-in-rape-case-by-up-court-more-on-sports-rattled-by-level-1-cancer-dutee-living-and-in-fear-1692370820-750×357.jpg 750w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-man-sentenced-to-12-years-in-prison-in-rape-case-by-up-court-more-on-sports-rattled-by-level-1-cancer-dutee-living-and-in-fear-1692370820-1024×487.jpg 1024w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-man-sentenced-to-12-years-in-prison-in-rape-case-by-up-court-more-on-sports-rattled-by-level-1-cancer-dutee-living-and-in-fear-1692370820-768×365.jpg 768w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-man-sentenced-to-12-years-in-prison-in-rape-case-by-up-court-more-on-sports-rattled-by-level-1-cancer-dutee-living-and-in-fear-1692370820-150×71.jpg 150w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-man-sentenced-to-12-years-in-prison-in-rape-case-by-up-court-more-on-sports-rattled-by-level-1-cancer-dutee-living-and-in-fear-1692370820.jpg 1240w” sizes=”(max-width: 1481px) 100vw, 1481px” title=”Dutee Chand is living and training in fear after suffering a level 1 cancer attack 3″>

Dr. Sudeep Satpathy, a professor at the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in Bhubaneswar and a specialist in sports medicine, identified Dutee as having stage 1 cancer.

As she recalled the chat she had with the doctor after the MRI findings, Dutee told PTI from Bhubaneswar, “I felt really terrified, anxious, and wondering what had happened to my life.

At one point, Dr. Satpathy was a member of the Indian hockey team.

Dutee described her journey, saying that her issues started in 2021 with a groin injury. “I had severe groin discomfort when participating in the National Inter-State Championships prior to the Tokyo Olympics (2021). I saw a few physicians, but the agony persisted. I attended the Olympics (in July–August 2021) but did poorly there, she said.

“After I got back from the Olympics, the pain just continued getting worse. The ultrasound I had was in November 2021. In the ultrasound, nothing was found.

The doctor (Sudeep Satpathy) informed me that a level 1 cancer attack had started after I had an MRI scan. He advised me to stop doing sports or things would become worse. When asked which bodily areas may have been damaged by cancer, Dutee said that she could only imagine the crotch region.

“I have an imbalance in my testosterone hormone, thus that might be the cause. The groin discomfort was gradually becoming worse. Everyone assumed the discomfort was in the groin, but the doctor warned that if it persisted, a cancer attack may occur. Dutee won a lawsuit at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in 2015 that challenged the international athletics governing body’s stance on hyperandrogenism, or high natural levels of testosterone in females.

She had previously been abruptly cut from the Indian team for the 2014 Commonwealth Games on the grounds that her hyperandrogenism prevented her from competing as a female athlete.

Dutee, who received a four-year suspension for failing a drug test, is the first Indian athlete to publicly admit to dating someone of the same sex in 2019.

When asked explicitly whether she had more testing to validate the results and determine her most recent condition, Dutee said, “At that time, the doctor (Satpathy) indicated it’s level 1 cancer attack. At that time, there was a lot of agony. But the discomfort diminished and there was healing after taking the medication. I did not undergo any more medical testing since I was in good health and not in too much discomfort. I then presented this sample to NADA, and they returned a positive drug test. The sprinter, 27, who took home silver in the 100-meter and 200-meter events at the 2018 Asian Games, stated, “That is the narrative.

She said that she only used the groin pain medication for 15 to 20 days. As the agony subsided, she stopped.

“I spoke to my doctor, who suggested that I take some time to relax since otherwise, the issue would only become worse. As a result, I took the medication for 15 to 20 days while reducing my workout a little.Due to the discomfort, I was unable to accomplish anything during the Commonwealth Games. This is similar to how pain increases with increased effort. After the MRI in November 2021, Dutee has surprisingly not had any more testing.

“I am not in a position to do medical tests (for the cancer diagnosis) as a result of this dope positive result (in January this year).” I feel absolutely harassed right now.

I transmitted the (medical) report to another specialist, who informed me that two to three other athletes had experienced the same thing. Stage 1 cancer is localized and has not yet disseminated. Stage 2 cancer continues to develop without migrating. Stage 3 cancer is more advanced and has the potential to spread to other tissues and/or lymph nodes.
