IOC Session Supports Double Award of Winter Games in 2030 and 2034

Members of the International Olympic Committee decided to approve a double allocation of two further winter games in 2030 and 2034 on Sunday.

The 2030 Winter Olympics were supposed to be announced at a session in Mumbai that starts on Sunday. The IOC’s preparations have been delayed, however, by issues with possible hosts. Sapporo, a longtime favorite to host in 2030, formally withdrew when public support in Japan collapsed in the wake of the Tokyo 2020 corruption allegations.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-237165″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-deepika-padukones-powerful-first-look-from-singham-3-gets-reactions-from-alia-bhat.jpg” alt=”theindiaprint.com deepika padukones powerful first look from singham 3 gets reactions from alia bhat” width=”1352″ height=”900″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-deepika-padukones-powerful-first-look-from-singham-3-gets-reactions-from-alia-bhat.jpg 275w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-deepika-padukones-powerful-first-look-from-singham-3-gets-reactions-from-alia-bhat-150×100.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1352px) 100vw, 1352px” title=”IOC Session Supports Double Award of Winter Games in 2030 and 2034 6″>

IOC President Thomas Bach stated at this week’s executive board meeting in Mumbai that only 10 countries would be able to host the snow events of an Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games by 2040 under current criteria due to climate change.

The worldwide snow-sports sector is in danger of extinction since natural snow is becoming harder to come by in certain areas owing to rising temperatures and a shortage of water for snowmaking.

Several people raised their hands to indicate their abstentions during the voting.

However, the proposal for a double award—comparable to the 2017 vote that handed the Games to Paris in 2024 and Los Angeles in 2029—was approved.

The proposal’s backers said that doing so would provide the commission consistency when evaluating the possibilities for winter sport.

Three nations were interested in hosting the 2030 Winter Olympics, according to commission chairman Karl Stoss of Austria, who made the announcement before Sunday’s vote, with Sweden, Switzerland, and France leading the pack.

American city Salt Lake City would prefer the year 2034 over the year 2028 in order to put more time between the two events.

Two of the suggestions made by Stoss were joint games between countries or regions and world championships that doubled as Olympic competitions.

But he insisted that maintaining the Olympic Games’ “uniqueness” was a primary concern.

In order to emphasize the need of staying on top of budgets and the need for a “decentralized” strategy to reduce expenses, Stoss used the term “nice to have, or need to have” throughout his speech.
